For most of Charlie Wells’ working life, she had found herself behind a desk performing mundane tasks that left her feeling uninspired and insignificant. Since her divorce, the pressure was high as bills mounted and her teen boys grew. Sure, her ex-husband kept the kids every other weekend, and did pay some child support, but she quickly learned to rely on herself.

When a shift in the direction of the Tabitha Barnes investigation arose and it became clear that Alan Chumbley had an as of yet uncertain connection, Charlie relied on her own intuition. Meeting with the seemingly mild-mannered coin collector had been Charlie’s idea. Now that idea was about to be put into action.

It almost felt like a date. Meeting Chumbley, a man who Charlie had only communicated to through Facebook, brought back memories of the last time she went out with a man. Yikes. That was almost two years ago, and it hadn’t gone well at all.

In the back of her mind, Charlie believed Alan had nothing to do with the abduction. He was just an average man, a widower. How could he have taken a child, let alone two? Then again, she never was a good judge of character when it came to men.

Charlie stood in her master bathroom and pumped the hairspray on her hair. Each spikey section froze in place, the bangs perfectly angled on her forehead. She spritzed on a mild floral perfume and walked into the kitchen to grab her things. She was set to arrive at the office first to meet with Shane, then drive to the Tampa Convention Center downtown. The plan was to meet Chumbley at the Riverwalk entrance number three on the bayside of the building.

On her arrival at the office, her partners waited. “What are you two doing here so early?” Charlie began. “Did we have a meeting I didn’t know about?”

Allison bore a worried expression. “We’re getting our ducks in a row, as they say. Did you sleep?”

Charlie grinned in an attempt to ease her friend’s concern. “Yes, just like I do every night. I’m fine, Alli. I’m not worried about strolling around the convention center with a coin collector. You shouldn’t be either.”

“I know you’re right. Shane will be there keeping an eye too, so there’s nothing to worry about.”

“And that’s what you need to remind yourself. I’ll get the answers we’re looking for, Alli. Have a little faith.” Charlie’s attention turned to the door as it opened.

“Morning. Wow, Charlie, look at you. You have a date or something?” Shane stepped inside.

“Funny. You’re a funny guy, Sully,” she replied.

“I think you look great, Charlie,” Lucy added.

“See? Lucy gets it. I don’t need to be there until 11, so should we go over the plan again?”

“I’d actually like to come up with an escape plan,” Allison said. “Not to be an alarmist, but if you need to high-tail it out of there, we should know how to make that happen.”

“Why would I need to leave?” Charlie asked.

“I’m going to side with Allison on this one,” Shane began.
